Research on 'Posters'

The posters I will be annotating have a particular similarity in genre as I felt it would be appropriate to find inspiration from films which have themes such as family or psychological aspects running through them.

'all or nothing' - Mike Leigh (2002) TRAILER
  • After analysing the synopsis from 'IMDB', it illustrates the story involves the working class and family dilemmas - these issues are similar to 'Anonymous' and is clearly shown on the poster.
  • The simplicity of the art work of just an image, fading into black shows the low budget, plus the quality is slightly grainy.
  • The layout is also basic with the cast and crew placed along the bottom, with the title above it and lastly the introduction of the director.
  • Only one prestigious award is placed in the top right corner, this indicates the film is not commercial and low key.
'Fish Tank' - Andrea Arnold (2009) TRAILER
  • The title is printed largely across the page, causing just as much attention as the image. This could be as the title of the movie is expressed in the fashion of a metaphor.
  • The image conveys a lot of mixed emotions such as sadness and escapism from the facial expression of the actress.
  • The pink stars from the ratings are inspired by the pink graffiti/wall, playing off with the world of the film.
  • The ripped wallpaper is overlapping the text, once again merging the art work with the world of the film.
  • Much recognition from the awards/ratings placed all over the poster.
'Nil By Mouth' - Gary Oldman (1997) TRAILER

  • The artwork is a lot more gritty with the dark colour scheme, also with a lot of shadow which creates suspense on the characters displayed.
  • All four characters would be assumed to be the focus during the film, and could possible have a link to one another.
  • The title is placed in the centre, with a black and white colour scheme.
  • The b&w colour scheme is also with the text about the director, as well as the one review at the bottom.
  • The fact that one review is displayed shows it's a film which would belong in a niche market of movies.
  • The fact that the film is also directed by a very well known British actor would create good publicity.
