Precious- film poster analysis

  • I have chosen this film poster because it is similar to what we want to use for our poster. It has a white background with clear and bold black font. It uses the main character as the central image for the poster but has butterfly wings on the side of her. These are used for effect as in the film she grows as a person adn it is like the life cycle of a caterpillar. She blossoms into a butterfly and is free.

The image itself is taken directly from the film, which i think makes it mor social realist as it has not been edited in any way. This makes it more realistic and relateable. The fact that there is white background makes us wonder what the film is about as there isnt really a setting. The butterfly wings unveil a lot about her character and less about the setting. However, as it has not got a CGI image as the background it shows that it is not going to be a highly cost effective film.

  • The film also uses the reviews and awards/nominations effectively as they are bold and stand out but dont take too much away from the actual picture. They are also positive points about the film and about the actors which persuades the audience to watch it as they want to see how well the actors acted.
However, this poster doesnt use a tagline where our film would. This makes it more catchy and appealing and can make the audience wonder what it is going to be about.
  • Precious is a teenage girl who is troubled at home. She is raped by her father and has two children by him. Her mother knows everything that is going on but does not help her in any way. She ridicules Precious for wanting to learn at school, as her mother expects her to cook and clean.
  • Precious is a very independant girl but finds it hard to stick up for herself when she is at home. When she goes to school she is very shy and finds it hard to express her feelings to the rest of the class.
  • This film is social realism as it is about Precious and her life. It is very gritty and is something that people can relate to, even if it is very extreme. The hair and make up is very natural and very working class. She doesnt look very fasionable and the clothes dont fit her that well, so that could mean that she has to wear clothes that are available to her, not out of choice.
  • From the poster, this film will be about a girl with problems who is trying to break free. You can tell this by the butterfly wings that are appearaing out of her. A butterfly grows from a caterpillar and has to go through a very long process to become something amazing. This can be resembled in this poster.
